So if you’re already familiar with veganism or the keto diet…or maybe both already…you probably think OH MY GOODNESS when you hear “vegan keto” TOGETHER.
Being both at once? Is it even possible? I mean, at first glance, they seem like polar opposites. But I think a lot of that is just stereotypes. We think of vegans as people who eat nothing but kale and fruit.
We think of keto dieters as subsisting on meat…but obviously these stereotypes don’t have to be true, and it’s super possible to eat awesome, filling meals that are vegan…keto…and yes, even BOTH.
Remember, all keto means is that you are consuming few enough carbs that’s your body is fat adapted and using the energy from fat, ketone bodies, instead of using glucose.
And while doing keto is EASIER when you’re consuming TONS of meat, eggs, cheese, butter, in order to be low-carb, high-fat…I certainly don’t think that’s the way to animals’ hearts, or avoiding a heart attack for you.
So, what if you could have the benefits of being in that ketogenic state..like weight loss and fat burning, lower cholesterol and blood pressure…etc., without giving up the healthfulness of veganism?
I just watched this super interesting video by Thomas DeLauer, where he tries vegan keto:
I’ve never tried it myself, but I was super surprised to hear how flexible you can actually be with this diet, although it would take so much research and preparation if you didn’t just want to limit yourself to like 10 foods…
WHICH, for the record, is super unhealthy both physically and especially mentally. I think the most important thing about a diet is that it should be sustainable, a lifestyle that you can and want to enjoy because it’s what makes you healthy and happy.
TONS of effort, restriction, and basically keeping yourself super whipped by your diet…that doesn’t sound healthy, happy, or sustainable to me!
I WILL say that from what Thomas said about his results from vegan keto, there’s nothing wrong with giving it a try. In just a few days he was able to DOUBLE the amount of burpees he could do! Like, huh??
But probably the number one question here (more so than “How many burpees will you be able to do on this diet…)
What can you eat?? Is it just 10 or so foods, like I mentioned earlier?
Well, first of all, nuts and seeds and avocados, plus nutritious supplemental sources of protein and fat like my fave delicious blend of whole foods…Shakeo!!
These are going to be absolutely vital for you. You’ll be eating low-carb fruits like berries and you’ll be eating tons of non-starchy veggies. Sounding salad-like?
Well, if you’re NOT into that, you’ll have to get CREATIVE. Thomas talks about how HE did that…making vegan keto chili with soy beans, onions, bell peppers, pasta sauce, garlic, spinach…remember, nothing about these diets limits your ability to use SPICES so that is probably where you are going to be able to get some enjoyment out of the situation!!
