If you're anything like me, you used to see a "momtrepreneur" (mom entrepreneur) on Facebook or whatever and wonder, how the heck do they do it? How is it possible to run your own business, while also taking care of a baby (which is ALREADY a pretty impossible task)?
Personally, I didn't see myself as a business owner until I actually became one by a pretty crazy stroke of luck. And I didn't even always see myself becoming a mom, either. Now, those two decisions are the best I've ever made! Well, Evie being the obvious first best, then marrying Andrew, then starting my own business, in that order. 😉
But if you're wondering how the heck someone could ever run a business with a baby, let me give you some tips that worked for me and others! I'm not saying it will be easy…OR anything short of nearly IMPOSSIBLE… But I'm going to help you anticipate what being a momtrepreneur is like!
First off, some wise words from Carrie Green, a Youtuber and momtrepreneur who is also one of the leaders of the Female Entrepreneur Association.
She says this: since obviously you're going to take some time off when the baby arrives, you should know in advance about how much time you'll be gone from your business.
For her, she knew she wanted to take at least 2 months to spend just connecting with and caring for her newborn, and so she planned specifically for that length of time away from her business. She planned way ahead to wrap up loose ends and to let her assistant take over certain duties. (If you don't currently have a team/assistant/etc. to take over any of the process, consider now whether that's financially doable for you — and remember that there are PLENTY OF virtual assistants who work remotely!)
I think of it like, ultimately, your baby does come first, and you don't want to end up resenting your business and feeling like it took time away from your memories with your baby!!
But at the same time, if you organize well…
Maybe using a software/organizational platform to keep track of client actions, and to automate things for you while you're away, like a weekly email…
…then you'll feel a LOT better!
Or as Carrie puts it, "Could you batch-create more content now? What can you do now?"
Also, even before her 2 months was over, she was of course updating hersocial media with pictures of the new baby. That way, your clients feel like they're a part of your life, and don't feel like you disappeared!!
One last thing I think is very important, that momprepreneur Untold Content on YouTube mentions:
You're not going to be able to do work for very long. I mean, I know that sounds like kind of a "duh," because of course you're going to be super drained. But you're also going to work in small chunks, because biologically, you've got baby on the brain!!
Yes, even if your husband is taking care of the babe all day on a Saturday or something, and you're free to work all day if you wanted to…Your body is telling you to go breastfeed, to go be with the baby every 2 hours as their naps are over, etc.
So even if those things aren't actually part of the equation, your body is going to be screaming for you to take a break!
So whether you are writing a blog post or working on some kind of deliverable or scheduling a few Facebook post in advance, just don't feel bad if you're not able to concentrate.
