Can a Power Massager Gun Soothe Your Sore Muscles?

Massages are GREAT and all, but I’m guessing most of us don’t own our own power massager GUN!! Sounds kinda scary to me…

But then I saw a bunch of ads for the Tim Tam Power Massager Gun. It’s supposed to be able to safely penetrate the skin to the deep tissue. And apparently there’s a scientific reason why it’s more effective than a typical electric massager. 🤷🤷

Is this TRUE, or is it just that a few companies got the smart idea to try and market a massage tool specifically to the fitness community? And our achy breaky muscles??

Because, in the case of the Tim Tam Power Massager Gun, not only were they able to come up with something that they say soothes and relaxes sore, tight muscles…but also was designed by physiotherapists. They claim it’s able to massage deep tissue. And that you can recover 30% FASTER!

Whaaat? You KNOW I had to look into this claim!!

Well, the idea behind these at-home deep tissue massagers is that they were first invented by a chiropractor. He ended up with really bad back pain in a motorcycle accident, and came up with this to help relieve his pain. But of course chiropractors are already kind of a controversial a group of doctors, or as some people would say, NOT doctors.

So I wanna quote an actual doc on this one: Dr. William Oswald, who’s a rehabilitative therapist at NYU, said that these massaging devices do work to relieve pain because they improve your blood flow and they can get lactic acid out of your sore muscles.

BUT that doesn’t mean the muscles are actually recovering FASTER, per se.

Basically, this stuff is no different than taking a pain pill (except of course probably safer than the pain pills over time). I’m always wary about claims like “helps muscles recover up to 30% faster.” Especially when there are no studies cited or further elaboration!

BUT the fact that it gets into deeper muscle tissue IS good for stopping pain. Why? The sensation in the deep tissue sends non-painful signals to your brain that INTERRUPT the pain signals.

One study even says, massaging yourself right after you’re done exercising prevents DOMS! (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)

But notice the article doesn’t say anything about needing a $200 power drill lookalike massager gun to get those effects. 😉

So in conclusion, I have nothing against the TimTam Power Massager Gun or the Theragun or any of the others. But I DO believe the claims on the website are overstated and that if you can’t afford the $200 price tag, you can get similar effects just massaging yourself…and way better effects by letting your spouse massage you. 😉 LOL!

But I do have know of two ways to rejuvenate those muscles quicker: casein protein, and the amino acid leucine. (See the links below for studies.)

And guess what has both these ingredients? Shakeology!

So you can “supplement” that massage with a shake and really treat yourself!! 😊
